Maryland men's basketball is coming to Baltimore this winter.
The Terrapins will face South Carolina on Saturday, December 19 at CFG Bank Arena, the program announced Tuesday. Tip time, television, and ticket information will be released at a later date. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs in Baltimore.
The game resumes a rivalry that has been dormant for more than two decades. The two teams have not met since March 29, 2005 in the NIT Semifinals at Madison Square Garden — a gap of more than 21 years. Maryland leads the all-time series 31-27, with the two programs having been conference rivals in both the Southern Conference and the ACC from their first meeting in 1925 until 1971.
The history between these programs includes one of the more memorable games in Terps basketball lore. On January 9, 1971, Maryland defeated the second-ranked Gamecocks 31-30 in overtime at Cole Field House. Jim O'Brien's jumper at the buzzer capped a six-point run in the final 14 seconds — a stunner that came after South Carolina had beaten the Terps by 26 points earlier that same season. The win marked Lefty Driesell's first victory against a ranked opponent as Maryland's head coach.
The December 19 game joins a non-conference schedule that already includes road trips to Georgetown (Nov. 7) and a Players Era Tournament opener against Tennessee (Nov. 24), plus a home game against Virginia (Nov. 13).
The 2026-27 season will also feature a year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of Maryland's 2002 NCAA National Championship, presented by Northrop Realty, with special promotions and events throughout the season at XFINITY Center.
