Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman is headed to the Boston Red Sox.
According to multiple sources, the Orioles are receiving catcher Carlos Narvaez, right-handed pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfield prospect Enddy Azocar, and a player to be named later in the deal. The Red Sox are also getting veteran catcher Jake Rogers, recently acquired by the Orioles for depth, and some cash.
ESPN's Jeff Passan was first to report the deal is done, a few hours before MLB's 6 p.m. Eastern time trade deadline.
Earlier Monday, ESPN's Buster Olney reported the Red Sox and Orioles had a deal arranged for Rutschman, the first overall draft pick in 2019 and a three-time All Star, that involves prospects, and it was reportedly waiting on Red Sox owner John Henry's approval.
Eyanson is Boston's second-highest rated prospect and No. 49 overall in the minor leagues, according to MLB Pipeline. Witherspoon is the Red Sox' fourth-highest rated prospect and Azocar is the fifth.
Rutschman is currently on the Orioles' 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation. It's his third stint on the IL this year.
He played in his third All-Star game just last month -- in an Orioles' uniform -- but now he'll suit up for an American League East division rival.
This is the biggest move Orioles general manager Mike Elias has made during his tenure as GM, and could have a lot to say about his future. Rutschman was Elias' first draft choice ever, as he began to lead a rebuild of the organization. The Orioles reached the playoffs twice since in 2023 and 2024, but haven't won a postseason game and are staring down a second straight sub-.500 season, a year after firing former manager Brandon Hyde.
Rutschman's future with the team came into question as soon as the Orioles signed fellow catcher Samuel Basallo to a eight-year contract shortly after Basallo's MLB debut late last season.
That was something the Orioles couldn't come to terms with with Rutschman, who was non-committal at the All-Star game when asked about wanting to stay with Baltimore long term, and has battled injuries and struggled at the plate the past few seasons, but was productive this year when healthy.
Last week, Elias said he has to be "open-minded" about a deal with Rutschman, who is due to be a free agent after 2027, but acknowledged the catcher's importance to the team.
"We have to be pretty open-minded in these talks," Elias said, "but Adley is one of the best things we have going for us."
The Orioles are now set to play against Rutschman in the division moving ahead. Baltimore next plays Boston on September 3 at Camden Yards.
