Toronto beat Baltimore 8-1 Sunday as George Springer's two-run home run off Trevor Rogers in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and ignited a three-homer barrage that put the game away.
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Andrés Giménez doubled on a pop fly to left that deflected off third baseman Christian Encarnación-Strand, scoring Charles McAdoo. Baltimore tied it in the fifth when Pete Alonso singled to right, scoring Dylan Beavers. The lead changed hands immediately. Springer's 15th home run made it 2-1 Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with his ninth homer to make it 3-1, and Kazuma Okamoto capped the inning with his 32nd to push the margin to 4-1. Toronto added four more in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk and a two-run, two-out double by Springer that cleared the bases and made it 8-1.
Rogers took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over six innings while surrendering all three home runs and striking out five. Yaramil Hiraldo gave up four earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Dylan Cease earned the win for Toronto, striking out nine over five innings and allowing just one run. Guerrero went 4-for-5 with a double and a homer, and Springer finished 2-for-5 with four RBI.
The loss dropped Baltimore to 72-78, leaving the Orioles 3.5 games behind the final AL wild-card spot with little margin for error in the season's final weeks.
