The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 Friday night as Sal Frelick singled on a ground ball to right field in the 10th inning, scoring Joey Ortiz off Orioles reliever Grant Wolfram to snap a tie and give Milwaukee the lead for good.
The Brewers grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the second on Jackson Chourio's three-run homer, his 24th, before Pete Alonso answered in the third with a three-run shot of his own — his 38th — that knotted the score 3-3 after umpires upheld the call on a review. Milwaukee broke through again in the ninth, with William Contreras doubling home Brice Turang and Christian Yelich singling in Contreras to push the lead to 5-3. Baltimore pulled even in the bottom of the ninth on sacrifice flies by Samuel Basallo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand, but Frelick's single in the 10th proved the difference.
Alonso finished 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to pace Baltimore's offense, while Coby Mayo went 3-for-4 with three doubles and Gunnar Henderson added three hits. Chourio led Milwaukee with a homer and three RBI. Brewers starter Dustin May lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, but Trevor Megill picked up the win and Chad Patrick earned the save with a scoreless 10th.
The loss dropped Baltimore to 75-79, leaving the Orioles 3.5 games back of the final American League wild-card spot with the postseason window narrowing.
