Maryland opened its season with a decisive 96-67 victory over Bucknell on Monday night at XFINITY Center, powered by a commanding 10-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a lead the Terrapins would never surrender. After trailing by two early, Maryland went on a burst starting with 7:01 left in the first half, turning a 23-25 hole into a 33-25 advantage and effectively settling the outcome well before halftime.
Andre Mills led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 8-of-12 from the field with three made threes. Kaden House added 14 points off the bench on 6-of-6 free throw shooting, and Pharrel Payne contributed 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting with two steals and two blocks. Maryland's dominance in the paint told the larger story: the Terrapins outscored Bucknell 54-18 in that area and piled up 28 offensive rebounds.
How it happened
Maryland held a 44-30 lead at halftime, built largely on the back of that early first-half run and a relentless second-chance advantage. The Terrapins turned 13 turnovers by Bucknell into 22 points and posted 18 fast-break points to Bucknell's 11. The second half was more of the same, with Maryland outscoring the Bison 52-37 and at one point stretching the margin to 29 points. Bucknell got 23 points from Aleksander Pachucki, who shot 7-of-11 from three, but the Bison committed 18 turnovers and shot just 64 percent from the free-throw line with little else going their way.
