Jake Moody Expected to Kick for Ravens vs. Jaguars as Tyler Loop Faces Possible IR Stint

Jesse Minter said the second-year kicker could land on injured reserve with a groin injury, rookie Joe Fagnano is fighting through his own ailments to give Baltimore a quarterback, and Vega Ioane says he feels ready to return Thursday night.

The Ravens may be changing kickers this week as well as quarterbacks.

Head coach Jesse Minter said Monday that Tyler Loop is dealing with an injury and "potentially may go on" injured reserve. Asked whether that means practice squad kicker Jake Moody will kick Thursday night, when Baltimore hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars at M&T Bank Stadium, Minter answered, "At this point, yes." Loop did not participate in Monday's walkthrough and was listed on the Week 9 injury report with a right groin injury.

"Tyler [Loop] has been dealing with something," Minter said. "He's dealing with a little bit of an injury, so we'll see how that shakes out."

Moody's Third Chance in Baltimore

Moody has been in and out of the building all season. Baltimore first signed him to the practice squad on Aug. 31, after Loop went 5-for-8 on field goals in the preseason. The team released him after Loop's clean Week 1 in Indianapolis. The Ravens brought Moody back on Oct. 19, a day after Loop missed his third field goal of the season in a three-point loss to Cleveland. That was the first time Minter publicly questioned his kicker.

Moody also has a history with Minter. The two were together at Michigan in 2022, when Minter was the Wolverines' defensive coordinator and Moody was their kicker. The former 49ers third-round pick has since kicked for several NFL teams, and he would need to be elevated or signed to the active roster to play Thursday.

For Loop, the timing is hard to ignore. The second-year kicker has faced questions since a missed game-winning field goal at Pittsburgh ended Baltimore's 2025 season. He answered with a strong start to this year, including a 57-yarder in the opener. An IR stint would keep him out at least four games and give Moody a real chance to win the job.

Fagnano Expected to 'Have a Chance to Play'

The quarterback outlook didn't get much clearer Monday, but it's leaning toward Joe Fagnano. The undrafted rookie finished Sunday's 36-10 loss in Buffalo after Lamar Jackson (thumb) and Tyler Huntley (toe) were both hurt, and he came out of it with his own bumps. He was limited Monday with an ankle injury.

"We're kind of working through some things, but to Joe [Fagnano]'s credit, he's kind of fighting through a couple things he's dealing with," Minter said. "[I] expect him to have a chance to play on Thursday."

Huntley's status is still unclear. "[He is] dealing with something," Minter said. "As we speak, [he is] kind of working through some different things. [We'll] see where that's at." The team has also signed quarterback Austin Reed, who spent the preseason in Baltimore, to the practice squad.

A short week leaves little time to get a new quarterback ready. Minter said walkthroughs can actually give individual players more reps than a full practice would. He added that Tuesday's session will include extra work for a few players, "whether we're getting a guy ready to play or seeing if a guy's able to play."

No Timeline on Lamar Jackson

Minter didn't give much detail on Jackson. He said Jackson has not had surgery yet, declined to say whether the thumb injury is structural or ligament-related, and said a firmer timeline could come "maybe sometime this week." When asked whether Jackson might have played his last game as a Raven, Minter said, "No."

He also described how the team has to play without its two-time MVP.

"When you lose a guy like Lamar [Jackson], it's a little bit of every phase doing a little bit more," Minter said. "It's [about] being able to play really good defense, being able to maybe make a play or steal a play on special teams, maybe a different style of offense of how we need to play. ... Obviously, Lamar's one of one."

Minter Has Rosengarten's Back

After the game, right tackle Roger Rosengarten said he felt responsible for Jackson's injury. The Bills' Greg Rousseau, whom Rosengarten was blocking, hit Jackson's throwing hand on the first snap. Minter dismissed that idea right away.

"I would say that's never the case," he said. "Football is a funny game — there's 100 percent injury rate for guys. ... I feel for [Roger Rosengarten] for thinking that, but we've got Roger's back."

He did acknowledge that the offensive line needs to be better. He said the team is "chasing improvement" and "chasing continuity," which a group that has started four different centers this season hasn't had. He also called some of Sunday's injuries "almost fluky." On Jackson's, he said the quarterback wasn't really being hit or pressured but couldn't finish his throwing motion.

Vega Ioane Feels Ready to Return

Rookie right guard Vega Ioane sounded like a player who expects to be back Thursday. He missed the Buffalo game with an MCL sprain and was limited in Monday's walkthrough, but said he's confident after a week of daily work with the training staff.

"I feel really good," Ioane said. "Like I said, if I was ready to go last Sunday, I would have gone, but I didn't want to go out there and be a liability to the team. But I feel confident now. [We will] see how practice feels tomorrow, and if I'm ready to go, then I'm ready to go."

Watching from the sideline as two quarterbacks went down was hard, he said, and he didn't make excuses for the line's performance.

"We know it's not our standard, and all the guys in the room know that. I'll be the first one to say it," Ioane said. "We take a lot of pride in going out there and protecting the quarterback. Some games it doesn't go like that, but I have big faith in our O-line, and I still do."

He also backed whichever quarterback gets the start, whether it's Fagnano or Reed, a 2024 undrafted free agent who began his career with the Chicago Bears and spent this preseason in Baltimore. "Joe [Fagnano], he's been here for a while. I have complete faith in him to go out there and play ball," Ioane said. As for Jackson, he called the injury tough to see after how hard the quarterback had worked to get back: "He's the leader of our team and our QB1. ... I know he's going to shake back."

'There's No Testimony Without a Test'

Minter opened his press conference by noting that kickoff was about 70 hours away. He kept the focus on the opponent and turned aside a question about how hard the week is for him personally.

"It's really not about me," Minter said. "I'd just say this, there's no testimony without a test. Adversity happens and it really reveals things about people."

He also pointed to the extra rest that comes after a Thursday game, since the Ravens get extra time off before facing the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 10.

"We're excited to play against these guys on Thursday, put our best guys out there that are healthy and ready to play and shoot our shot and see what happens," he said.
