Hyattsville, Maryland native Frances Tiafoe, the 19th ranked men's tennis player in the world, lost a third-round thriller at Wimbledon on Saturday, falling in five sets to 10th-seeded Alexander Bublik.
The match went four-plus hours. Bublik won 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(11), 4-6, 6-3 over Tiafoe, who was seeded 20th in the tournament. Tiafoe had nine set points in the third-set tiebreak before succumbing to Bublik, who fired off 48 aces for the match.
The loss ended a seven-match winning streak for Tiafoe. In a warmup tournament before Wimbledon, he won a grass-court title in Halle, beating American Taylor Fritz in the final. Fritz will face Bublik in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon.
Tiafoe will now turn his attention to the hard court season, which includes a stop in Washington, D.C., to play the Mubadala DC Open July 25 to August 2 at Rock Creek Park.
