The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations, according to Ari Alexander of 7 Boston News. The exact dollar amount of the deal has not been publicly disclosed.
Baltimore will select Martin onto the 40-man roster and option him to Triple-A Norfolk. With Chris Bassitt going on the 60-day IL, the Orioles had an open roster spot.
The 30-year-old Martin has yet to appear in a major league game. He is a 5-foot-8, 155-pound left-handed hitter, capable of playing all three outfield positions, and originally drafted by Kansas City in the 25th round of the 2014 draft out of a Mississippi high school. He's played in the minors for a decade, with nearly 2,000 at-bats.
It's unclear if Martin Jr. will see time in Baltimore. The Orioles have a deep outfield rotation, but should they move one or two pieces near the trade deadline, it's possible Martin could be a name you hear in the bigs later this year.
