Orioles Recall Johnathan Rodríguez From Norfolk Amid Catching Injury Crisis

Baltimore turns to its Triple-A depth as simultaneous injuries to Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo thin the major league roster.

Baltimore Sports Feed · July 22, 2026

The Baltimore Orioles recalled outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez (#62) from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday as the club scrambles to address a mounting injury situation. Rodríguez had already been elevated to the taxi squad in Boston as of July 20, signaling the organization anticipated the need for reinforcements before the move was officially made.

The recall comes as Baltimore is navigating a serious catching depth crisis. Adley Rutschman was placed on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation, retroactive to July 19, after sustaining the injury on a swing during the July 17 game in Houston. Samuel Basallo also exited the July 19 Houston game with an apparent injury, further depleting the Orioles' roster depth. With multiple players sidelined at once, Rodríguez's promotion gives Baltimore an additional option in the outfield as the team works to keep its lineup functional through the stretch.
