Orioles Claim Catcher Yohel Pozo Off Waivers from St. Louis

The 29-year-old will be a depth piece and a contingency plan for if or when Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo return.

The Orioles have claimed 29-year-old catcher Yohel Pozo off waivers, the team announced today, and designated outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez for assignment to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move.

Baltimore claimed Pozo from the St. Louis Cardinals. He caught more than 300 innings for St. Louis last year and saw some more time this year and is considered a good defensive catcher rather than a hitter, batting .233 during his time with the Cardinals.

Pozo will be a depth piece for the Orioles, whose starting catchers Adley Rutschman (left wrist) and Samuel Basallo (right shoulder) are simultaneously on the 10-day injured list.

If or when Rutschman and Basallo get healthy, Sam Huff and Chadwick Tromp – Baltimore’s two catchers on the active roster right now – could be pushed off the roster and onto the waiver wire since they are both out of options.

Pozo could be a catcher that sticks around if either Huff or Tromp are claimed by other teams.
