Ike Irish, the Baltimore Orioles' first-round pick in 2025 and one of the top prospects in the organization, tore his left meniscus sliding into second base during a High-A Frederick Keys game on Wednesday. The Orioles announced he is likely out for the rest of the season.
Irish, 22, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was selected 19th overall out of Auburn last year and signed for a $4.4 million bonus. At Auburn, he posted an OPS over 1.000 across three seasons before the Orioles drafted him as a catcher — a position he has since transitioned away from, moving to first base and the corner outfield to give the organization more roster flexibility.
The results in his first full professional season have been exactly what Baltimore hoped for. In 76 games at Frederick, Irish was hitting .286 with a .915 OPS. He was one of two Orioles prospects invited to the All-Star Futures Game this month, alongside left-hander Joseph Dzierwa. Baseball America ranked him second on Baltimore's top-30 prospect list at midseason, behind 2026 first-round pick Eric Booth Jr., and 76th among all prospects in the game.
The injury carries two distinct costs.
The first is developmental. Irish was perhaps a bit of a surprise still in High-A after 76 games given how well he was hitting — a promotion to Double-A Bowie was a realistic possibility before the end of the year. That path is now closed for 2026. A meniscus tear typically requires surgery, with a recovery timeline of four to six months. He could be healthy in time for next spring, but this was supposed to be a year he spent accelerating toward Baltimore, and that acceleration is over.
The second is organizational. The Orioles, if they operate as buyers ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, may well have attracted ample interest from opposing teams for a prospect of Irish's caliber. A 22-year-old hitting .286 with a .915 OPS in High-A, ranked 76th in baseball, is exactly the kind of chip that moves in deadline negotiations. With Irish injured and unavailable for evaluation, that card is effectively off the table — which may narrow Baltimore's options or reduce the return on any deal they pursue.
The Orioles have had a difficult year with injuries at every level. This is the latest. Irish will have time to recover and should enter 2027 healthy, but this was shaping up to be a significant developmental year for him, and that's gone now.
