Navy beat Tulsa 34-26 Saturday as quarterback Jackson Gutierrez capped a Midshipmen comeback with a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:30 remaining, giving Navy a lead it would not relinquish.
Gutierrez finished with 232 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 41 carries, adding a touchdown pass to Truman Brasfield — a 58-yard strike that was the longest play of the game for Navy's offense. Fullback Michael Barrow contributed 107 yards on 14 carries, and Charles Robinson added a rushing touchdown of his own as Navy's triple-option ground game controlled the game's decisive stretches.
Navy trailed at some point before rallying, and Gutierrez's go-ahead score with 8:31 showing on the fourth-quarter clock proved to be the margin. Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes threw for 268 yards and a touchdown on 21-of-38 passing, and the Golden Hurricane got scoring contributions from Oran Singleton Jr. and David Wells Jr. through the air, but the offense could not overcome Navy's ground-game advantage. Gutierrez did lose two fumbles, and Barrow lost one, keeping Tulsa in the game longer than the final score suggests.
Navy travels to face UTSA on Saturday, October 17.
