Former Orioles first baseman and designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn, who revitalized his career in Baltimore before being dealt at last year's trading deadline, made history on Tuesday night.
O'Hearn hit three home runs and had 10 RBI for the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 12-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, becoming only the 17th player in MLB history to record 10 RBIs in a single game. The last to do it was Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani in 2024.
O'Hearn hit a grand slam in the first inning and a three-run shot in the third. He grounded out in his next at bat, then hit another three-run shot in the sixth, before getting a single in his final plate appearance.
Of course, while Pete Alonso is a welcome presence at first and a strong bat and Samuel Basallo provides power at DH when he's not catching, O'Hearn's performance brings up thoughts of "what could have been?" if he were still in Baltimore, and he wasn't traded San Diego last season as the O's underperformed expectations and were sellers at the trade deadline. The same could happen this year.
