The Pirates drafted Baz 12th overall in 2017 then traded him to Tampa Bay in the Chris Archer deal — giving up Baz, Tyler Glasnow, and Austin Meadows for a pitcher who contributed little. Baz debuted in September 2021 and immediately looked like an ace: 78.5% strikes in his first start, the highest rate for a pitcher’s debut since tracking began. Tommy John surgery in September 2022 cost him all of 2023. He returned in 2024 with a 3.06 ERA in 14 starts, then pitched a full season in 2025. The Orioles acquired him that December and locked him up in March 2026 for five years and $68 million.
